Sorrow has a half-life
decaying, one atom at a time
but never fully gone,
proving Zeno right.
Joy, too, once all-consuming,
degrades with the days
until the memory is sweeter
than the moment
that gave it life.
They say the universe,
though now expanding,
will one day cease
and then contract again
collapsing in upon itself
like the memory of joy
and of pain
until, undifferentiated,
all becomes one.
