Jesus v. the axis of power enforced by violence

The cross is where the world founded by Cain is decisively judged. Cain blamed and killed his brother and then founded civilization by building the first city. We live in the world that Cain built—a world of blame and killing. It’s a world organized around an axis of power enforced by violence. But at the cross this world is judged. Jesus Christ was condemned to death under the auspices of two men: Joseph Caiaphas and Pontius Pilate. The high priest and the Roman governor represent two towering human achievements—religion and politics.
